the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced the 15-man India squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup. Chairman of selectors, MSK Prasad and acting secretary of the Indian board Amitabh Chaudhary read out the names one by one with a couple of minor changes in the team.
Rishabh Pant and Ambati Rayudu have been left out of the team by the selectors. Dinesh Karthik and KL Rahul have made the cut and so has all-rounder Vijay Shankar.
The selectors have opted for experience over X-factor by naming a well-balanced squad. The rest of the players almost picked themselves with Virat Kohli at the helm.

MSK Prasad spoke to the media in Mumbai and named the squad in the presence of Amitabh Chaudhary and said his committee has selected one of the most balanced Indian teams.
“In the last one year or so, these two wrist spinners have done well. Wickets might be a bit more dry. Jadeja might come in handy,” MSK Prasad said on Monday.

“After the Champions Trophy, we have tried a few middle order options. We gave a few more chances to Rayudu but what Vijay Shankar offers is 3 dimensional. If the conditions are overcast. he might bowl a bit and he is a fantastic fielder. He is a batsman who can bowl.
“In the team, we have the luxury of 7 bowlers. We have covered all the bases and this is one of the most balanced Indian sides for the World Cup,” Prasad said.

Prasad also revealed the Khaleel Ahmed and Navdeep Saini were also discussed as back-up pacers and added they would be on stand-by and will fly down to England if the need arises.
“Khaleel and Saini were discussed and they will be around. If the need arises, one of them will go to England,” he said.

India’s World Cup preparation started soon after the Champions Trophy in England two years ago. India had lost the final to Pakistan and it was then that the selectors decided to try out two wrist spinners in Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

“We had been planning soon after the completion of the Champions Trophy but in the last month or two, a couple of players like Vijay Shankar cropped up,” MSK Prasad said
Dinesh Karthik stumped young wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant to make a surprise entry in India’s 15-member squad for the World Cup 2019, announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai on Monday. On paper, it seems India decided to stick to the One-Day International squad they fielded over the recent few months — in the ODI series against Australia and New Zealand — except for a surprise inclusion and two exclusions.
Along with Rishabh Pant, Ambati Rayudu is set to miss the flight to the UK after having failed to impress much with the willow. As expected, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli were picked for the top three spots. KL Rahul was included as the back-up opener. Talking about KL Rahul, chief selector MSK Prasad said: “We also have a role for KL Rahul in the top order, he is the reserve opener.” Tamil Nadu all-rounder Vijay Shankar made it for his “three-dimensional” qualities. Ambati Rayudu, who has been India’s No.4 since last year’s Asia Cup, had an indifferent Australia series and has not set the IPL on fire either.
Rayudu’s highest score in the Australia series was 18. Even against New Zealand in January, he only managed one 50-plus score.
Rahul might not have a lot of ODI experience under his belt but a solid technique, centuries in Tests in Australia and England and the backing of the team management work in his favour. Rahul and Pandya’s comments on the TV show ‘Koffee with Karan’ put a question mark over their World Cup participation but both served out five-match suspensions and are very much part of the team set-up now.

Delhi wicket-keeper batsman Pant might just be the X-factor that his skipper Kohli and team needs in a tournament of this magnitude. Pant has shown his skills at the Test level although his returns in ODIs and T20s have been inconsistent so far.
The selectors believe they might require a left-hander in the middle-order to tackle the slew of leg-spinners like Adam Zampa, Adil Rashid, Imran Tahir, Ish Sodhi, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman that India might face in the World Cup.
“We believe Pant has the ability to be a match-winner in ODIs as well. After Dhawan, there is no left-hander in the batting line-up and Pant can fulfill that role in the middle-order to tackle leg-spinners that we might face,” sources close to the team management informed CricketNext.
“Also, it is a long tournament, the team will need a backup wicketkeeper for Dhoni over the course of nine games. Rahul can step into that role but Pant is a specialist. It will be interesting which way the selectors swing,” the source added.
